About Dale Fall Fest

Since its beginnings in 1969, Dale Fall Fest has grown into one of southern Indiana’s favorite community celebrations. Held each September in the heart of Dale, Indiana, the festival brings together residents, families, alumni, and visitors for three days of hometown traditions, great food, live entertainment, and family fun.

What started as a small local event has become one of southern Indiana’s largest street festivals while remaining true to its roots. Organized entirely by dedicated volunteers, Dale Fall Fest is made possible through the efforts of local churches, civic organizations, businesses, schools, and countless community members who work together each year to create an unforgettable experience.

From the lively parade and carnival midway to live music, competitions, children’s activities, and the Festival Queen Pageant, there’s something for every age. Of course, no visit is complete without enjoying the festival’s famous food, served by local organizations that use the event to support worthwhile community programs throughout the year.

More than just a festival, Dale Fall Fest is a celebration of small-town values, community pride, and the friendships that have made Dale a special place for generations. Whether you’re returning home for the weekend or discovering the festival for the first time, we invite you to join us in celebrating the people, traditions, and spirit that make Dale Fall Fest a cherished annual tradition.

History of Fall Fest

The roots of the Dale Fall Fest date back to 1948, when the Kiwanis Club of Dale organized the town’s first Fall Festival. Established to celebrate the community’s agricultural heritage, local businesses, and hometown spirit, the event also served as a fundraiser for school playground equipment. Early festivals featured a queen contest, parade, square dancing, costume contests, games, and family entertainment, creating a tradition that brought the community together each autumn.

In 1968, community leaders and volunteers officially established the Dale Fall Fest, building upon those early celebrations to create the town-wide festival we know today. With a renewed focus on community involvement and supporting local projects, the festival continued to grow through the dedication of volunteers, civic organizations, businesses, and countless supporters. Today, the Dale Fall Fest remains a cherished tradition, celebrating the values, heritage, and small-town spirit that make Dale a truly special place.

David Turnham

Dale Trivia

David Turnham (1803–1884)

Born in Kentucky on August 21, 1803, to Thomas David Turnham and Eva Liston, David Turnham became a prominent early settler and lifelong resident of Spencer County, Indiana. After marrying Elizabeth Emmick in 1824, with whom he raised four children, Turnham spent roughly three decades in Carter Township, making his home in the community of Dale.

History remembers Turnham as a close boyhood friend and neighbor of Abraham Lincoln during the future president’s formative years in southern Indiana. Notably, Turnham loaned a young Lincoln The Revised Laws of Indiana—the very first law book Lincoln ever read—and later provided crucial eyewitness accounts of Lincoln’s youth to historians following the president’s assassination. Turnham passed away on August 30, 1884, at the age of 81, and was laid to rest in the Dale Cemetery.
