Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865)
While Abraham Lincoln spent his youth living just south of town, his ties to the Dale area altered American history. As a teenager, Lincoln frequently walked to Carter Township to visit his close friend, David Turnham. Turnham owned a copy of The Revised Laws of Indiana—a rare volume containing the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. Lincoln spent hours poring over the pages at Turnham’s home just outside of Dale. It was the very first law book Lincoln ever read, and historians credit this specific text with igniting his passion for the law and setting him on the path to the presidency.
